- 요약This dissertation employs a multi-method qualitative research approach involving the collection of oral narratives from contemporary Black burlesque performers through interviews and participant-observation research of burlesque workshops and in-person performances. Additionally, as a final qualitative research method approach, the dissertation consists of analyses of videotaped performances. This multi-method research approach helps address two aims of the project: to make an empirical contribution by cementing Black burlesque dancers, both past and present, into burlesque history, which is imperative given that white historians and burlesque aficionados have sidelined them. Secondly, the dissertation aims to make a theoretical contribution by applying the concept of fugitivity, thereby avoiding further erasure of Black burlesque dancers and facilitating an understanding of Black burlesque performance. Fugitivity is the practice of refusal, resistance, and escape, specifically, an ongoing refusal of laws, limits, and societal constraints imposed by power regimes. The concept of fugitivity can also be extended more broadly to describe Blackness. By employing fugitivity as a lens, each chapter reveals how Black burlesque performers utilize burlesque as a site for freedom, expression, healing, and escape.
