요약In the last decades, there have been important changes in the dairy industry including improvements in management, increased farm size, reliability on hired labor, greater adoption of technologies, and improvement in milk production potential for cows. The changes have resulted in greater efficiencies in multiple aspects, however, these advancements may also represent challenges. The combination of increased herd size with being able to milk cows faster, a trend being pursued by many farms, can result in the prioritization of efficiency to the detriment of the cow's physiology. The success of the dairy industry depends on optimizing the cow's physiology. For milk harvesting, this is driven by the milk ejection reflex. The milk ejection reflex must be elicited, and enough time elapsed before the milking process starts, to avoid delayed milk ejection. The consequences of delayed milk ejection have been frequently addressed in the literature, including its impact on milk yield. However, the results of recent studies challenged the previous consensus of no impact. To explore further the effect of delayed milk ejection on yield, in Chapter 2 we evaluated continuous milk flow meters integrated into the milking parlors as an alternative to identify milkings with delayed milk ejection. We found the average flow rate during 30-60 s after unit attachment- information obtained with these meters- can be used to identify delayed milk ejection events. Thus, on-farm continuous milk meters may serve as an alternative to the gold standard tools to identify delayed milk ejection. This will allow farms with to more practically estimate and monitor delayed milk ejection across a larger sample of the herd, which will allow managers to further investigate delayed milk injection-related issues. Our results from Chapter 2 were put into practice in Chapter 3 and 4. This new tool allowed for the evaluation of large data sets to be used for management and research purposes. Next, in Chapter 3, we investigated the association of delayed milk ejection and yield in the long term. We found that in a period of 10 days, increased frequency of delayed milk ejection resulted in milk yield reduction. Our results confirm that delayed milk ejection has a negative impact on yield, thus it can have an economic impact and should be prevented. Although such the association of delayed milk ejection, with potential causes (e.g., inadequate milking preparation, lameness, and milk production) have been well studied, it is unknown if factors occurring before the premilking procedures can also lead to delayed milk ejection. Thus, in Chapter 4, we aimed to evaluate the association between the premilking experience of the cows- walking speed, time walking to and waiting at the holding pen- and delayed milk ejection and yield. Our study showed that time in the holding pen is positively associated with yield, adding to the importance of providing good cow comfort in the holding pen. We also found that cows that walked faster or waited for longer times had higher risk of delayed milk ejection, however, that relationship between speed with delayed milk ejection was modified by the time in the holding pen. The higher risk of walking faster could be diminished by longer waiting times. Farms could use this information when planning cow transit to the milking parlor.
