- 요약This dissertation examines international trade and spatial economics with a focus on natural resources and geopolitical tensions.In the first chapter, I use a novel geospatial dataset of global fishery catch and develop a quantitative dynamic spatial model to quantify the externalities from open access in global fishing. I first show that assigning property rights leads to larger fishery stock and fuel subsidies to vessels are positively correlated with high sea fishing. Then, I build a dynamic spatial model of global fisheries and compare two polar cases of open access: the decentralized equilibrium, where atomistic firms have open access to the fishery, and the socially optimal allocation, where the social planner has exclusive property rights. Taking the model to the data in 2018, I find that in the socially optimal allocation, the average global fishery stock at the steady state increases by 88%, and the net present value of global welfare increases by 0.11%, compared to the decentralized equilibrium. The counterfactual analysis shows that fuel subsidies are globally welfare-reducing and decrease the average global fishery stock at the steady state by 3.2%.The second chapter, co-authored with Farid Farrokhi, Heitor S. Pellegrina, and Sebastian Sotelo, investigates the relationship between international trade and deforestation. Using the data on forest and agricultural land use from 1990-2020, we document that deforestation is strongly associated with agricultural land expansion and is more severe in countries with comparative advantage in agriculture. We show analytically and quantitatively that global reductions in trade costs reduce global deforestation when agriculture is complementary in demand to other sectors. Using the calibrated model, we demonstrate that multilateral reductions in agricultural trade costs reduce global deforestation by 0.5 percentage points. We find that countries with comparative advantage in agriculture also tend to have absolute advantage, making trade liberalization globally land-saving.The third chapter, co-authored with Barthelemy Bonadio, Zhen Huo, Andrei A. Levchenko, Nitya Pandalai-Nayar, Hiroshi Toma, and Petia Topalova, analyzes how recent geopolitical tensions have reshaped global trade patterns. Using bilateral trade data from 2015-2023, we document evidence of trade fragmentation rather than deglobalization, with countries sorting into US-aligned and China-aligned blocs. Contrary to conventional wisdom, we find that the median country experienced a 0.6% increase in real income due to these changing trade patterns, as within-bloc trade costs decreased while cross-bloc costs increased. We also discover that bloc alignment often does not follow economic interests, suggesting that geopolitical considerations increasingly influence trade relationships.Together, these chapters advance our understanding of the complex interconnections between international trade and spatial economics in a changing global landscape.
