초록/해제
요약Music therapists have often faced the question of whether or not to censor music that has been deemed inappropriate. To date, there has been little research on how, why, and to what extent music therapists censor the music they use in clinical interventions. The existing research on music therapists' censorship practices has primarily focused on mental health settings. Specifically, there has been a lack of scholarship focused on how music therapists working in K-12 public school systems navigate censorship. The purpose of this study was to describe censorship practices of music therapists working within a K-12 public school system. The research questions were: (1) Do music therapists within the school system ever have to censor?, (2) If music therapists do censor, what elements do they censor most often?, (3) What factors within public school music therapists' work impact their censorship decisions?, (4) What methods do music therapists utilize in their censorship practice?, and (5) Who and/or what enforces censorship practices within the school system? . This explanatory sequential study took place in three phases. In Phase 1, board-certified music therapists working in a public school system (N = 13) in the Southeastern United States completed an 18 question survey regarding their use of censorship within the school based music therapy sessions. In Phase 2, a subset of participants (n = 7) who completed Phase 1 engaged in 1:1 interviews with the primary investigator. During these interviews, participants elaborated on their understanding of music therapy censorship practices. Using information gathered from Phase 2, the primary investigator conducted a content analysis of policies (N = 22) relevant to participants' censorship in Phase 3. Results indicated that most participants had to use censorship at least occasionally in their music therapy sessions. Most reported that material related to violence, substance use, and/or sexual references would most likely require some degree of censorship. Through interpretative phenomenological analysis, data generated through interviews revealed that most participants censored musical elements that did not match with their definition of school appropriate. Participants most commonly expressed utilizing "clean" recordings of songs to censor music used in sessions, but the types of clean recordings utilized varied. When considering various scenarios in their work, most participants had strong opinions for or against censorship. Even so, there was a discrepancy in knowledge of censorship policies at the state/federal, school, and department level. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.
