- 요약My Symphony is in three movements, following a fast-slow-fast scheme. It was inspired by my love of the symphonic form from its beginnings in the Classical Era through 19th-century Romanticism exemplified by the works of Johannes Brahms, Gustav Mahler, and others, and continuing to modernists and post-modernists like Igor Stravinsky, William Schuman, Einojuhani Rautavaraa, and John Corigliano. This work was written in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Music from Florida State University. The first movement is cast in a Type 2 sonata form (Hepokoski and Darcy, 2006), with a conventional exposition consists of a primary theme, based on a do-ti-do stepwise motive, a transition, and a second theme, based on a mi-sol-mi motive outlining a third. These two motives, and the two themes built out of them, will serve as the main material for the rest of the work. After a development, the incipit of the main theme reappears in the horns, but fails to reestablish the original key, E-flat major, and a recapitulation of the second theme follows before the movement dissolves into the second movement. The tempo increases continually throughout, until we wrap around with a metric modulation (half notes equals quarter) so that the recapitulation of the second theme occurs at its original tempo, half = 80.The second movement is slow and begins with a clarinet solo over strings, in the manner of a recitative accompagnato. A passage over a pedal, inspired by the beginning of the last movement of Das Lied von der Erde, follows, then a wispy, Ligeti-inspired passage that eventually coalesces into a long melodic line. The movement culminates in an extended dominant G7 sonority, leading us into the third movement. The harmonic idiom in this symphony is predominantly tonal, though I have aimed to avoid most trappings of functional tonality. Nevertheless, keys and pitch centers are still central to my view of form in this work. The symphony opens in E-flat major, but precisely when that tonality should be reaffirmed -at the recapitulation-the music breaks down into A major, a tritone away. What follows is a pale shadow of the second theme we have previously head. The sonata form does not provide the expected tonal and thematic resolution in the original key, signaling a different destination. The true goal of the symphony is C major, first hinted at in the second half of the development, which occurs over a C pedal. The breakthrough (inspired by the Durchbruche-breakthroughs-of Mahler, especially the outer movements of his First Symphony) is in the second movement, which climaxes on a G dominant-seventh in third inversion-but this resolves to a first inversion C major triad at the start of the third movement, denying full tonal resolution until the arrival of a root-position C major chord in the coda, recalling in principle the tonal structure of the finale of Brahms's First Symphony.
