- 요약Technology plays an integral role in the fabric of everyday family life, supporting communication, child development, health, entertainment, and learning. Yet, designing interactive systems that are both meaningful and widely adopted (and genuinely embraced) by families remains a complex and evolving challenge. In fields like Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), there is a growing recognition of the need for more holistic and contextually grounded understandings of family life-ones that reflect the complexity of group interaction and diversity of family dynamics and domestic environments. My research seeks to address this gap through a family-centered lens, exploring how domestic technologies can be more thoughtfully designed to support the everyday social, health-related, and educational goals families encounter. My dissertation examines the context of family-food interactions as a key factor for understanding and designing everyday family technologies. First, I explore family meal practices through interviews and participatory design studies, uncovering the coordination and challenges involved in shared food routines and informing design implications. Second, I examine the lived experience of managing childhood food allergies, highlighting how families balance informational, emotional, and social needs while navigating evolving caregiving roles. Together, these studies shed light on how to design everyday family technologies that are attuned to the transitional, dynamic, and collaborative nature of family life.My dissertation contributes to the HCI and CSCW community by offering a multidimensional understanding of how families engage in food- and health-related practices and how we might better design for the complex realities of everyday family life. These contributions fall into three major areas [1]:(1) Empirical insights into holistic everyday family meal experiences alongside design implications for shared domestic technologies. Chapters 3 and 4 demonstrate that family meal processes are deeply embedded with emotional, symbolic, and relational meaning. They are more than routines-they are rituals, sites of tension, and evolving reflections of family life. My findings reveal how families maintain and adapt meal practices amid negotiation, care labor, and disagreements, highlighting that technology should not simply aim to eliminate conflict or optimize routines. Rather, systems should be designed to scaffold reflection, shared meaning-making, and the emotional work that underpins these everyday rituals. These insights point to a need for design approaches that value the expressive and relational dimensions of family life, not just coordination or efficiency. (2) Theory-informed analysis of everyday family-food interactions. In Chapters 3, 4, and 5, I developed a theory-informed analysis that incorporates six primary conceptual framings: Family Routines and Rituals, Symbolic Interactionism Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Family Systems Theory, Ecological Systems Theory, and Family Development Theory. These theoretical lenses provided the scaffolding to examine the subtleties of my empirical data and allowed for a deeper understanding of the developmental, affective, and relational dynamics at play in daily food routines and chronic care contexts. Rather than treating theory as background, I actively used these lenses to interpret how families distribute and negotiate responsibilities, manage change, and express care through food. During this process, I also proposed two sensitizing concepts, generative and systemic discontents (chapter 4), as conceptual framings that help characterize and categorize the social and emotional complexity of everyday family lives, as well as in embracing and designing for the messy reality of family interactions that are not always unanimous and celebratory. (3) Reflections on the design of future family-centered systems that aim to provide sustainable, meaningful support for the evolving needs of diverse families. Drawing from all three studies, Chapter 6 articulates a forward-looking design agenda grounded in the lived messiness of family life. I argue that personal informatics should be reimagined as relational and ecological, with systems that support co-tracking, co-regulation, and intergenerational knowledge transfer. I advocate for designs that support developmental transitions-such as shifting care from parent to child-and that make visible the "invisible work" (often gendered and emotional) of family caregiving. I also propose technologies that can sustain and adapt with families over time, including AI-supported milestone tracking, collaborative dashboards, and ritual-aware notification systems. In addition to design insights, I offer methodological contributions for studying and designing with families as a whole, not just for them. I demonstrate how family-based group interviews and remote participatory design sessions can serve as effective strategies for engaging the entire family as a unit of analysis. These methods allowed me to surface intra-family dynamics, multi-vocal perspectives, and co-constructed meanings that are often overlooked in individual interviews. By centering the family as a collective-rather than a sum of individuals-I was able to explore how responsibilities are negotiated, how care is distributed, and how technologies might better reflect the relational realities of everyday family life.Importantly, I also offer a gentle caution against over-reliance on AI and automation: everyday family care is inherently emotional, contextual, and negotiated, and technologies must be designed to enhance-not erase-these human dimensions. Through these contributions, my dissertation provides both practical and theoretically informed insights and visions for designing interactive systems that are inclusive, developmentally sensitive, and attuned to the everyday complexity of family care.
