■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  is  based  on  ethnographic  research  that  I  conducted  in  2022-2023  in  Birgunj,  a  border-city  in  southern  Nepal.  Foregrounding  overarching  multisensory  practices  and  sociopolitical  contexts  that  frame  and  inform  my  research  and  writing  processes,  I  focus  on  the  diverse  musical  and  culinary  practices  that  contrast  with  or  complement  the  existing  perception  and  narratives  of  Birgunj  as  a  mere  commercial  hub.My  introductory  chapter  establishes  Birgunj  in  relation  to  Nepal  and  South  Asia  as  I  explore  the  academic  discourses  and  sociocultural  narratives  that  highlight  the  concepts  and  practices  of  food  and  music  in  Birgunj.  My  second  chapter  focuses  on  the  festival  of  Holi,  issues  of  reciprocity  and  communal  agency  in  the  face  of  sociopolitical  neglect,  demonstrating  how  music  brings  communities  together  in  celebration,  but  it  is  food  practices  that  signal  communal  agency,  reciprocity,  and  inter-caste  dynamics.  My  third  chapter  gauges  cosmopolitan  aspirations  embedded  in  the  practices  of  food  and  music  in  the  restaurant  music  scene  of  Birgunj,  where  I  reconsider  the  term  "scene"  in  the  context  of  Birgunj's  emergent  music  scene  that  primarily  exists  in  restaurants.  My  fourth  chapter  discusses  a  socially  significant  dish  called  tarua  and  its  textural  and  sonic  properties  that  inform  the  social  importance  of  the  dish  across  Birgunj  and  Southern  Nepal.  My  concluding  chapter  suggests  new  avenues  for  interdisciplinary  applicability  of  sensory  framework  in  public  scholarship,  as  I  venture  further  into  fields  of  sensory  ethnography  and  gastromusicology.My  engagements  with  the  fields  of  sound  studies/ethnomusicology,  food  anthropology,  and  sensory  ethnography  provide  an  interdisciplinary  angle  to  my  research,  while  my  practice  of  autoethnography  and  ethnographic  memoirs  shapes  my  ethnographic  writing  process.  I  argue  that  an  empathetic  attention  towards  Southern  Nepali  culture  is  vital  to  understanding  music  and  food  as  vital  sites  of  sensorial  engagement  that  enhance  our  appreciation  of  Southern  Nepali  culture  and  identity.
