- 요약This dissertation examines the decisions of farmers in the U.S. Midwest in response to climate change (Chapters 1 and 2) and economic incentives (Chapter 3). By analyzing how farmers adjust their production practices in the face of environmental pressures and economic incentives, this research contributes to a broader understanding of farmer behavior at the intersection of agronomy and economics.The Midwest plays a critical role in global agriculture, producing approximately one third of the world's corn and soybean supply. Understanding the effects of climate change on this region is therefore essential. While extensive research has shown that climate change reduces agricultural productivity and poses risks to global food security, its impacts are not uniform across regions. Findings based on global averages or from other areas may not be directly applicable to the Midwest, which accounts for only about 0.4 percent of the world's land area but contributes disproportionately to global grain production.A key objective of this dissertation is to infer farmers' production decisions by comparing findings from agronomic field trial data with those from observational data. Agronomic trials are designed to evaluate the effect of a single variable, such as a seed variety or a particular input level, while holding other factors constant. In contrast, farmers in real-world settings make joint decisions across many dimensions in order to maximize profit. This fundamental difference in the decision-making process can result in outcomes that diverge from those predicted by controlled experiments. By comparing these outcomes, we can better understand how farmers respond to real constraints and incentives. This comparison yields insights valuable to both agronomic science and agricultural economics.
