■520    ▼aThis  treatise  investigates  the  role  of  the  oboe  in  Latin  American  classical  music,  using  as  a  medium  three  characteristic  dance  forms:  the  vals,  the  pasillo,  and  the  bambuco.  These  are  observed  through  selected  works  by  contemporary  composers  Jorge  Alvarado  Bravo,  Jannet  Alvarado  Delgado,  and  Manuel  Matarrita.  Latin  America  has  a  rich  cultural  and  musical  heritage,  yet  the  music  from  this  region  is  still  underrepresented  in  the  standard  classical  music  canon.  This  scarcity  is  even  more  noticeable  when  one  examines  the  same  body  of  literature  that  includes  the  oboe.  By  analyzing  selected  movements  from  Daily  Suite  by  Jorge  Alvarado  Bravo,  Pasillo  y  Cuento  by  Jannet  Alvarado  Delgado,  and  Cuatro  Estampas  by  Manuel  Matarrita,  this  study  will  show  how  these  composers  combine  traditional  Latin  American  dance  features,  modern  compositional  techniques,  and  the  individual  style  of  each  composer. Through  historical  contextualization,  biographical  research,  musical  style  analysis,  and  a  performance-based  approach  toward  the  selected  pieces,  this  research  will  illustrate  distinctive  characteristics  of  these  works  and  the  dance  forms  they  highlight,  and  consider  how  they  contribute  to  the  preservation  and  evolution  of  Latin  American  music.  Through  firsthand  interviews  with  each  composer  and  one  prominent  oboist,  this  treatise  includes  direct  information  that  is  relevant  to  the  pieces  and  the  styles.  The  composers  shared  relevant  information  on  their  creative  processes  and  interpretations  of  these  dance  styles. The  treatise  emphasizes  the  expressive  potential  the  oboe  has  to  offer  to  Latin  American  music  through  these  genres.  Furthermore,  this  treatise  is  intended  to  bring  awareness  to  this  repertoire,  and  encourage  more  commissions  that  include  the  oboe  in  these  styles.  By  bridging traditional  and  contemporary  elements,  this  study  encourages  a  greater  appreciation  for  Latin  American  classical  music  and  its  intersection  with  national  and  cultural  identity.
