- 요약The purpose of this study was to explore college marching band directors and college marching band participants' perceptions of the effect of marching band on the college football game day atmosphere. This study used an exploratory mixed method design approach involving qualitative and descriptive processes. Two different participant groups were used, current college marching band directors and college marching band participants. In the qualitative component, data were gathered through the interviews with current collegiate marching band directors. Then, a descriptive survey was created using the qualitative data which was completed by current collegiate marching band participants. The results from the qualitative section indicated the marching band directors felt their bands have a positive impact on the game day atmosphere of football games. Most, if not all, of the director reported that their bands participate in a number of events throughout the game day, including a day-of rehearsal, the team entrance to the stadium, the band's march to the stadium, an on-field pregame show, an on-field halftime show, and in-game performances during timeout breaks and in between plays. The directors also reported positive relationships with their athletic departments, however, they had differing opinions of the balance between how much their band could perform throughout the game and the promotions and stadium music facilitated by the athletic and marketing departments. The results of the quantitative suggest that marching band participants also feel their bands have a positive impact on the game day atmosphere. Students indicated the pregame performance, halftime performance, team walk to the stadium, and in-game performances had the most positive impact on the atmosphere. Generally, the students believed the balance between the band and the other in-game components was even. They believe that they create energy and excitement throughout the game and that the atmosphere would be very different if the marching band was not in attendance. Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.
