초록/해제
요약The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of black band directors who taught at predominantly white institutions following the abolishment of segregation. Specifically, the challenges and successes experienced throughout their personal and professional lives throughout segregation and integration. Participants in this study graduated from a Historically Black College or University at the end of segregation. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 abolished segregation, resulting in job opportunities previously not afforded to black directors. During a two-hour interview, commonalities and differences experienced by each participant resulted in the following themes: (1) joining the band late, (2) representation, (3) mentorship, (4) quality music, and (5) support. This study was created to produce a document of hope for aspiring black musicians who aspire to become band directors. This study reveals the experiences of their predecessors who broke the color barrier in music education at predominantly white institutions.
