- 요약Experiments to measure the Neutron Electric Dipole Moment (nEDM) are low energy probes of CP-violating physics sensitive to Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics that is required to resolve the baryon asymmetry problem. The Los Alamos National Lab (LANL) nEDM experiment, a double cell Ultracold Neutron (UCN) experiment with a 199Hg comagnetometer, plans to measure the nEDM with a statistics-limited uncertainty of 2 x 10−27\uD835\uDC52·cm, a tenfold improvement of the world's best measurement to date. To achieve this uncertainty, the LANL nEDM requires a well-controlled and characterized magnetic environment to transport polarized UCNs from the polarizing magnet into the experimental volume and within the experimental volume. This dissertation reports four studies crucial to establishing the experiment: spin transport efficiency, the characterization of the LANL nEDM Magnetically Shielded Room (MSR), the characterization of prototype magnetometers to monitor the field in the experimental volume, and the development of a Radial Basis Function (RBF) interpolation strategy to estimate the magnetic field in the experimental volume from a set of magnetometer measurements. The spin transport efficiency from the polarizing magnet through the Spin Transport Coils (STCs) is estimated to be ∼ 0.868 in the current coil configuration. The characterization of the LANL nEDM MSR finds that the magnetic field difference between the two precession chambers changes by less than 5 fT in 180 s, greatly exceeding the LANL nEDM requirement that the magnetic field difference between the two precession chambers change by less than 136 fT in 180 s. This work also describes a magnetometer system that can determine changes as large as ∼ 1.5 pT to less than 100 fT, which meets the 136 fT stability requirement. These studies show that, assuming that the gradient from the applied magnetic field coil is sufficiently stable, the LANL nEDM experiment can expect to operate in the statistics-limited regime.
