- 요약Scientific discoveries are critical inputs for innovation, yet many remain confined within academia, disconnected from the people and organizations that could apply them. As scientific output grows more technical and voluminous, effective communication has become an essential mechanism for making research accessible, and actionable beyond its field of origin. This dissertation examines how both structured communication efforts through science communication and social learning shape knowledge diffusion and organizational action.The first two essays examine how science communication through press releases affects the use of scientific knowledge by firms and academics. Using a novel dataset linking the universe of university and journal-issued press releases to corresponding academic papers over the past 25 years, and combining it with patent and citation records, these essays estimate the causal effect of science communication on the use of science by firms and researchers. The first essay shows that press-released papers are over ten times more likely to be cited in firm-owned patents, with the strongest effects for highly technical research outside firms' core domains and among firms with existing R&D capabilities-suggesting that science communication reduces some barriers but requires absorptive capacity. The second essay examines whether media attention helps mitigate or reinforce existing inequalities in scientific recognition. It finds that press releases significantly boost academic citations, particularly for papers in lower-ranked journals and by authors from less prestigious institutions. The findings show that media attention can surface under-recognized work and partially offset disparities in whose work gets noticed.The third essay turns to a different but related question: how organizations respond to uncertainty in the absence of formal guidance. Drawing on high-resolution cellphone mobility data from over 230,000 U.S. businesses during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, it shows that small, independent stores were significantly more likely to remain open when a higher proportion of nearby national chains stayed open. These results provide causal evidence of social learning, demonstrating that organizations often rely on the observed behavior of others to guide decisions when direct communication is limited or ambiguous.Together, these essays reveal how structured communication and social learning shape knowledge diffusion and organizational decision-making. They underscore how different information channels determine whose work gains visibility, how knowledge gets applied, and who ultimately benefits from new insights.
