초록/해제
요약Despite growing emphasis on engaging research partners in health research, little is known about how best practices for engagement are operationalized in real-world settings and how they contribute to meaningful experiences for research partners. This dissertation addresses this gap by exploring how the Harrison et al. (2019) framework for meaningful engagement was applied in HearCARE, a long-term community-engaged study involving an advisory panel of 18 diverse research partners. Using an emergent qualitative design, this study investigated how 22 best practices, and 3 foundational principles were operationalized to allow research partners to self-identify as meaningfully engaged across the study's lifespan (aim 1) and how these practices supported research partners' experiences of the principles of respect and equity, trust, and empowerment (aim 2).In aim 1, grounded theory lite was used to analyze semi-structured interviews with 14 research partners. Explanatory models revealed how the cumulative use of layered, responsive best practices, combined with the enactment of foundational principles, enabled partners to self-identify as meaningfully engaged. They also highlighted the importance of skilled staff, a dedicated budget, and strong relationships in fostering an inclusive advisory environment where all voices were heard. Personal qualities and behaviors from the research team, such as being patient, welcoming and encouraging, were also central to participant experiences of the principles in relation to meaningful engagement. In aim 2, a deductive thematic analysis explored whether and how best practices enabled identification with the three engagement principles. Findings showed that when implemented with care, practices such as providing feedback on how input was used, using inclusive language, setting clear expectations, and creating opportunities for relationship-building fostered feelings of respect, trust, and empowerment. Participants also emphasized the importance of how practices were implemented. Importantly, no single activity was sufficient. Meaningful engagement emerged through the synergistic and sustained use of multiple best practices over time. This study demonstrates that when foundational principles and best practices are implemented together, supported by skilled personnel, thoughtful planning, and adequate resources, meaningful engagement can be achieved and sustained. These findings offer explanatory depth and practical guidance for research teams and institutions seeking to build authentic partnerships.
