요약As sustainability disclosure has become common, so have concerns of greenwashing, whereby a company may portray itself in a more environmentally positive way than is warranted. In this dissertation I explore ways to reduce greenwashing in sustainability disclosures and commitments through the development of frameworks, terminology, and metrics. First, my research explores corporate Net Zero goals and whether they constitute more substantive or symbolic commitments. I explore the dimensions that underpin where a Net Zero goal falls on the continuum between substantive and symbolic, and I develop a framework that can assess firm commitments and provide a path for firms to move towards more substantive Net Zero goals. I apply this framework to the Net Zero commitments of the S&P 500 and conclude that the majority of current goals are more closely aligned with symbolic rather than substantive commitments. In the second paper, I provide a systematic review of the uses of the emerging term "Scope 4" emissions. Through this research, I assess the current definitions in use across the academic and practitioner literature for their alignment with the aims of the GHG Protocol, their ability to reduce greenwashing, and their ability to provide insight into additional aspects of a firm's emissions footprint. I conclude that defining Scope 4 emissions to be the "Potential Future Emissions" of firms based on their existing and disclosed proved fossil fuel reserves best aligns with these criteria. Finally, the third paper focuses on the characteristics of metrics that can reduce greenwashing and promote peer learning and improvement. These aims can be accomplished by ensuring metrics have IMPACT: they should be Insightful, Material for the planet, Precise, Assured, Comparable, and Time-bound. We illustrate how these criteria apply using an early set of public Net Zero commitments. Each of these research papers contributes to the understanding of how greenwashing can be reduced and how the utility of sustainability disclosures can be improved.
