요약Behind-the-Curtain Medicine: Acɛ̀ and Obo in Beninois Lifeworlds offers ethnographic explorations of cosmic forces (acɛ̀ /aṣẹ) and empowered medicines in contexts of healthcare, ontology, and religion in southeastern Benin. The dissertation contends that far from being ambivalent "fetish" objects used solely in instances of Vodun ritual and indigenous healing; empowered medicines (obo) are ontological mediators of human/environmental relationships that shape the ways in which trans-organismic life unfolds. Obo are constructed by masters of the craft known as obowatɔ́ and often take the form of bottles, horns, figures, bundles, talismans, balms, soaps, and perfumes. Obowatɔ́ create empowered medicines with herbal, animal, human, and mineral ingredients and often in various forms of communion with spirits, ancestors, and divinities. On the surface, obo allow healers to afford themselves and their patients salient means of navigating everyday challenges. In shaping the world according to human desires, dreams, and hopes, however, obo also propel the rhizomatic filaments that shape what ontological anthropologists call the "meshworks" of lived reality into other-than-human realms. I contend that obo maintain their popularity, and ambiguity, in 21st century west Africa because people are often adrift in oceans of relations with perceptible and imperceptible others that can only be mediated through acɛ̀ -producing technologies. In commissioning and living with empowered medicines, humans constitute and re-constitute the entangled relations that spur the world's continuous coming-into-being. More presciently, through acɛ̀manipulations effectuated with obo, humans become precarious cosmic co-mediators alongside the other-than-human forces who otherwise sustain the weave and weft of everyday life. Following these streams of logic, I focus on how illness and health manifest in southern Benin and why animals are so important to indigenous medicine production, masquerade, sacrificial offering, and other instances of human/divine dividuation. By looking at animals as medicines rather than for medicines, I demonstrate that indigenous healing events often zoomorphize humans, allowing them to exercise agencies and abilities that otherwise transcend human corporealities and social means. Since health and illness are frequently mediated by the syncopations and ruptures of divine, spiritual, and human contacts, I also provide an in-depth exploration of the numinous agents who share the universe with humans and who shape their lifeworlds.
