■520    ▼aJacques  Casterede's  composition  for  wind  band,  Divertissement  d'ete  (1965),  occupies  an  important  distinction  within  Casterede's  oeuvre,  the  catalogue  of  commissioned  works  from  the  American  Wind  Symphony  Orchestra  (AWSO),  and  the  wind  band  medium.  Commissioned  by  Robert  Boudreau  for  the  AWSO,  this  piece  was  originally  intended  to  serve  the  ensemble's  expansive  series  of  children's  concerts.  Since  its  premiere  in  1965,  the  work  has  received  numerous  performances  throughout  the  world  by  academic  and  professional  wind  bands  alike. Divertissement  d'ete  is  one  of  eight  compositions  contributed  by  Casterede  to  the  more  than  450  works  found  in  the  AWSO  Commissioning  Project  catalogue.  This  project,  led  by  Boudreau,  sought  to  expand  wind  band  repertoire,  inviting  composers  throughout  the  world  to  contribute  their  unique  compositional  voices  to  the  endeavor.  As  one  of  only  two  composers  commissioned  in  the  first  year  of  the  AWSO's  inception  (1957),  Casterede  stands  as  a  monumental  figure  and  prolific  composer  throughout  wind  band  history. Both  the  manuscript  score  and  parts  to  Divertissement  d'ete  are  inundated  with  errata  and  ambiguous  formatting,  which  create  confusion  during  rehearsals  and  performance.  The  author,  with  permission  of  the  publisher  -Wise  Music  Group  (Edition  Peters)  -  has  created  a  new  critical  edition  of  this  composition.  Additional  insights  for  the new  edition  were  provided  by  a  professional  music  engraver,  interviews  with  prominent  wind  band  conductors,  and  expert  faculty. In  this  document,  the  author  provides  historical  context,  an  analysis  of  each  movement,  commentary  from  expert  conductors,  and  indexes  the  extensive  errata  found  within  the  manuscript  materials.  The  intent  of  this  project  and  document  is  to  acknowledge  one  of  the  most  influential  composers  and  pieces  in  the  AWSO  catalogue  and  provide  greater  context  and  supporting  information,  which  may  apply  to  future  study  and  performance  of  this  work.  The  author  further  hopes  that  this  project  encourages  additional  restorations  of  historic  wind  band  compositions  within  and  beyond  the  AWSO  catalogue.
