■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  examines  how  representational  and  regulatory  shocks  reshape  economic  and  social  outcomes.  Each  essay  leverages  a  quasi-experimental  design  and  newly  assembled  data  to  identify  causal  effects.The  first  chapter  studies  the  1933  redesign  of  London's  Tube  map  as  a  city-wide  information  shock  to  perceived  distance.  Using  a  continuous-dose  difference-in-differences  design-with  dose  defined  by  the  station-specific  change  in  apparent  proximity  on  the  1933  diagram  relative  to  the  1932  map-and  station,  neighborhood,  and  listing-level  data  from  1927-1939,  the  chapter  shows  that  areas  visually  pulled  closer  to  central  London  experienced  sizable  real  responses.  Still-undeveloped  catchments  built  substantially  more  housing,  advertised  house  prices  rose,  and  transport-related  newspaper  mentions  increased.The  second  chapter  analyzes  the  effect  of  Sunday  blue-law  repeals  on  religious  participation  and  economic  connectedness.  Exploiting  matched  county  pairs  straddling  state  borders  and  the  staggered  timing  of  repeals,  the  chapter  documents  that  ending  Sunday  closing  laws  reduces  formal  religious  participation  and  lowers  cross-class  economic  connectedness,  with  the  largest  effects  in  places  with  high  baseline  adherence.  Event-study  and  spatially  robust  inference  support  identifying  assumptions.The  third  chapter  asks  whether  alarmist  media  coverage  of  a  cultural  shock  can  move  short-run  electoral  outcomes.  Using  county-level  newspaper  coverage  of  the  Beatles  in  1963-1964  to  measure  local  exposure  to  moral-panic  framing,  a  first-difference  design  relates  early  alarmist  coverage  to  subsequent  changes  in  Democratic  vote  share.  Counties  with  higher  alarmist  exposure  saw  lower  Democratic  performance  in  1964,  with  patterns  consistent  with  a  transient  backlash  concentrated  in  the  US  South.Taken  together,  the  essays  show  that  maps,  laws,  and  media  can  reallocate  construction  and  prices,  rewire  social  ties,  and  shift  votes.  By  linking  information  design  and  institutional  timing  to  spatial,  social,  and  political  equilibria,  the  dissertation  highlights  policy-relevant  levers  that  operate  through  behavior  and  perception  rather  than  physical  infrastructure.
