- 요약I demonstrate throughout this dissertation that taking motets at their word allows us to uncover the wide world of medieval poet-composers in their social, historical, and political milieux. The relationship between the medieval university, musical practices, faith practices, and cultural contexts such as biases (of gender or ethnicity), war, and crusade pervade the context in which motets were composed. In the three case studies, each motet I examine serves as a window into a world of social, political, and historical realities. In chapter two, I use the motet Hare, hare, hie / Balaan / Balaam to establish the deep-seated interconnection between motet composition culture and student-cleric culture at the thirteenth-century University of Paris, where debates on musical "national" styles coincide with the "nations" of the university to form close-knit and exclusionary groups of students based on ethnic-and musical-characteristics. In chapter three, I build on the university connection between motets and magisters to draw out anxieties about gender and labor. Through the motet In Salvatore nomine / Ce fu en tres douz tens / In Veritate comperi / Veritatem, I expand the issue of gendered labor to encompass a magisterial concern with musical labor qua bodily labor. Through themes of disguise and dishonesty, I explore the exegetical resonances of the three women in the motet-Tamar, the Virgin Mary, and the unnamed Lady of the triplum-and their classed positioning in medieval minds. Finally, in chapter four, I take the motetus Ma loiaute m'a nuisi as a window into French Christian conceptions of the religious Other. The motetus's reference to "tartarins," or Mongols, exposes a network of song, manuscript circulation and contemporaneous University of Paris-sponsored missions abroad. I offer a historical, manuscriptbased account of what the reference of Mongols means in both in the musical context of the piece and in a close reading of the text, which builds on and deepens previous scholarship about the motet. Fleeting references can offer greater avenues for exploration than scholarly scrutiny has so far allowed. In each case study, the seed of a broader cultural concept germinates from small musico-textual allusions.
