- 요약This study evaluates six Arabic textbook series based on current teaching methodologies and Second Language Acquisition (SLA) Principles. Three research questions guided the study. The first deals with the amount of meaningful input and output provided to learners through Arabic textbooks. The second deals with how well Arabic textbooks focus on meaning and form. The third deals with how well they provide learners with opportunities for input and output in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and a dialect. To answer the research questions, a qualitative analysis and evaluation of the individual activities contained within the textbooks was performed. A total of 4676 activities were analyzed in the six textbook series. Each activity was labeled by skill type (reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, and grammar), activity type (mechanical, meaningful, and communicative), and language variety (MSA, dialect, or a mix of both). The skill type shows the type of input learners receive (reading or listening) and the type of output they are asked to produce (speaking and writing) while the activity type shows how well textbooks focus on meaning and form. The language variety type shows how well Arabic textbooks present the diglossic situation of the Arab world. The collected data was then analyzed to determine how well Arabic textbooks align with Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and principles of SLA. The results from this study indicate that Arabic textbooks do a decent job of providing learners with ample opportunities for input in the language while the number of opportunities for output, particularly in the form of speaking, is an area for improvement in future Arabic textbook development. Arabic textbooks also provide learners with opportunities for meaningful interaction; however, most textbooks do not provide learners with a significant number of communicative tasks, thus indicating that textbooks still focus on grammar rather than focusing on both meaning and form. Most textbooks do not present the true diglossic situation of the Arab world and focus only on MSA rather than introducing learners to both MSA and at least one dialect.
