요약Magical Elsewheres: Setting and Place in the Nineteenth-Century British Fairy Tale addresses the central yet often overlooked problem of setting in the nineteenth-century British literary fairy tale, a core narrative element that has typically been sidelined or neglected in critical discussions on the genre more broadly. Whether in castles, bucolic landscapes, or ominous forests, the tropes of fairy tale settings commonly suggest a place that is either nowhere or anywhere: fairy tales tend to imply placeless places that are fictive and beyond the tangible realities of our world. The data, however, presents a different story. Through a computational analysis utilizing digital humanities tools and methods such as natural language processing and GIS mapping, as well as close textual analysis, my project literally "maps" the named and implied places of the nineteenth-century British literary fairy tale, challenging the notion that the fairy tale place is solely abstract. I argue that setting is a defining feature of the broader fairy tale genre, and that literary fairy tales of the nineteenth century tend to take place somewhere: there are often specific and mappable locations that these texts mention directly or refer to. My dissertation shows how locations within the fairy tales of this period are both overdetermined and underdetermined, which points to an unsettling of and anxiety about place as well as the invention of a particular kind of fairy tale that melds the real with the imagined when conceiving of setting. Through examining the fairy tales of Sara Coleridge, John Ruskin, and Oscar Wilde, I analyze how their use of setting is not idle but has a complex set of meanings and values attached to it.
