요약The three studies in this dissertation provide an initial investigation into how listener bilingualism, dysarthria, and available linguistic information/ utterance length influence adult listeners' word recognition, listening effort, and fatigue when listening to speech of monolingual children with neurotypical development, children with dysarthria, and adolescents with dysarthria. Across studies, dysarthria, which increases speech signal distortion, was consistently associated with reduced word recognition and heightened perceived listening effort and fatigue for both bilingual and monolingual listeners. Word recognition of bilingual listeners was particularly more affected by dysarthric speech then monolingual listeners, especially in multi-word contexts. While a multi-word advantage was observed in the speech of neurotypical children age 5;0 - 6;11, this benefit was absent in the speech of children with dysarthria age 5;0 - 6;11 for both listener groups. Vocabulary knowledge supported word recognition and partially accounted for performance differences between bilingual and monolingual listeners. The positive impact of vocabulary was most pronounced when speech was relatively clear and rich in linguistic cues, but its effect decreased with more severe dysarthria for both listener groups. Developmental improvements in speech of children with dysarthria corresponded with better word recognition and lower listening effort and fatigue; however, bilingual listeners continued to show lower word recognition than monolingual listeners. Additionally, the absence of a multi-word advantage in the speech of children with dysarthria persisted into early adolescence (10;0 to 11;11) across both listener group. Findings suggest that listener's language background, speaker characteristics, and task-specific factors, such as utterance length/ availability of linguistic information, interact to shape word recognition, listening effort, and fatigue in adult listeners.
