- 요약This dissertation examines how protest news reporting styles influence evaluations of protesters, support for the protest issue, and general attitudes about the effectiveness of protesters. It argues that perceived worthiness is the most important storytelling trait when reporting on protest. Using multiple media experiments, this dissertation explores how differences in framing can translate to differences in support, beyond pre-existing attitudes. The key findings show that worthiness is a reliable predictor of intent to take future action, and is crucial in generating support for the protest issue and the protest methods. However, worthiness is less of a factor in generating interest in the protest issue. Furthermore, there is evidence that evaluations of one protest may carryover to protesting in general as a viable political communication strategy. Finally, this dissertation explores how hostile media perceptions moderate the magnitude of partisan evaluations of protest news, showing how media perceptions strengthen or dampen the effect of the protest news story framing.
