- 요약This dissertation examines whether and to what extent gender inequality manifests in earnings, employment mobility, and health outcomes within nonstandard employment. Nonstandard employment is becoming an increasingly important part of the workforce. However, research on nonstandard employment has largely concentrated on men, while the study of gender has primarily focused on individuals in full-time standard employment within organizational settings. Drawing on theoretical arguments that structural constraints faced by women lead to gender disparities, I conduct analyses using data from the 2014 and 2018 Survey of Income and Program Participation. Findings reveal that gender inequality in earnings not only persists in nonstandard employment but is more pronounced in nonstandard employment compared to full-time standard employment due to gender differences in work hours, though variation exists across nonstandard work arrangements. Results also show that women disproportionately make downward transitions from standard employment to nonstandard employment compared to men, and having children increases women's likelihood of make such transitions. Following these employment transitions, mothers in the most precarious forms of employment experience severe earnings penalties. Findings from the health analysis do not completely refute the positive account of nonstandard employment for women. The dissertation makes theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on gender and nonstandard employment and offers broader implications.
