초록/해제
요약This dissertation examined the role that peer relationships played in the development of body dissatisfaction among adolescent girls, focusing on the influence of an adolescent girl's closest friendship. It specifically considered perceived ethnic homophily to one's closest friend, general trait similarity, and ethnic identity centrality as factors that may influence body dissatisfaction. Using multiple regression analyses with a sample of 172 11th grade girls (44.8% Latina, 55.2% White) from four ethnically diverse public high schools in California, Oregon, and Wisconsin, this study explored how peer characteristics and individual factors relate to body dissatisfaction. Findings underscore the persistent influence of BMI as it was the only variable predictive of body dissatisfaction. The discussion considers the ways friendship dynamics and individual identity relate to body dissatisfaction to understand the potential social and cultural contributors to the development of body dissatisfaction in adolescence.
