- 요약Jazz pedagogy and school jazz ensemble instruction have historically been overlooked in academic research, evidenced by a lack of studies on jazz ensemble pedagogy (Koch, 2020) and the limited, inconsistent formal jazz preparation many music educators receive (Regier, 2019). The primary purpose of this study was to gain understanding of the pedagogical values, philosophical beliefs, and instructional strategies of successful jazz educators. A secondary aim was to gain insight into factors that make Seattle a center for successful high school jazz bands and how the jazz education ecosystem in Seattle has evolved over time. Using a qualitative multiple bounded case study methodology, I collected narrative data from eight music educators in the State of Washington through semi-structured interviews, field observations, and document analysis. Member checks, sustained engagement, and a peer audit of themes were also utilized to enhance the trustworthiness of findings.Guided by Saldana's (2021) coding analysis approach, I identified five themes from the data: Repertoire is the Jazz Curriculum, Teaching Informed Interpretation, Building a Successful Rhythm Section, Listening to Learn, Learning to Listen, and Finding Purposeful Professional Development Opportunities. To position these themes within a broader pedagogical perspective, data were analyzed using Shulman's (1986a) Pedagogical Content Knowledge framework, focusing on how expert teachers organize their thinking, sequence lessons, and deliver instruction effectively. In addition, Porter's (1998) Cluster Theory was used to examine how geographic and related social factors influence jazz education in Seattle, Washington, complemented by a historical narrative providing further contextual understanding. Findings from this research provide important considerations for better understanding instructional techniques needed to succeed in teaching jazz to middle school and high school instrumentalists. Further, the interplay between instruction and external factors offers clearer insight into building successful school jazz programs.
