- 요약Core worth is an individual difference reflecting the belief that one has unassailable worth and value. This dissertation reports on two lines of research demonstrating the relationship between core worth and openness toward outgroup members and forgiveness of those who have caused harm. Chapter 1 provides an overview of core worth and presents a rationale for how core worth is expected to affect interpersonal relationships more broadly. In Chapter 2, three studies examine the association between core worth and perceptions of political ingroup and outgroup members, including assessments conducted both before and after the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election. Core worth predicted greater openness toward political outgroup members, and this relationship was mediated by higher core worth being associated with perceiving outgroup members as having higher core worth. In Chapter 3, three studies examine the association between core worth and the willingness to forgive following an emotional transgression, both in a fictional narrative and in reflection on a past personal experience. Core worth predicted a greater willingness to forgive in both contexts. Chapter 4 discusses the implications of these findings. In sum, core worth predicts a greater openness to outgroup members and a stronger propensity to forgive.
