- 요약One of the outstanding questions within the field of suppression research regards whether implicitly-learned and explicitly-cued suppression are independent processes or different components of a single attentional control state (Luck et al., 2021). This dissertation evaluated that question by designing tasks capable of eliciting each manner of suppression with minimal modifications for the experimental designs and implementing each task within the same group of participants to directly compare implicitly-learned and explicitly-cued suppression. Experiment 1 revealed that some listeners could use knowledge of an upcoming distractor sound to deliberately ignore it, but there were large individual differences in the ability to use this explicitly-cued suppression. Experiment 2 expanded on those results by comparing performance on implicitly-learned and explicitly-cued suppression tasks within participants, and by exploring potential sources of individual differences in the ability to use each form of suppression. No correlation was found between implicitly-learned and explicitly-cued suppression scores, suggesting that the two forms of suppression are distinct mechanisms. However, this conclusion is limited because of weak internal consistency of the suppression scores and because relationships with meaningful cognitive abilities such as implicit learning and working memory were not observed in the current investigation. Together, the current evidence indicates that implicitly-learned and explicitly-cued suppression are independent processes, but additional research is needed to understand individual differences in the ability to use each form of suppression.
