요약Simulation has been utilized within the aviation industry for more than one hundred years to help lower the cost of training and make training more efficient. Current federal regulations allow for the use of flight simulation in numerous ways, making simulation ubiquitous within the aviation industry. From airline training to military and collegiate training, pilots routinely train on various procedures and tasks within the confines of a virtual environment before demonstrating their proficiency in a real aircraft. Virtual reality has become increasingly available in the commercial market in recent years. When incorporated into a flight simulation device, the technology has the potential to lower the cost of traditional simulation by eliminating the need for visual projection. This dissertation compares a virtual-reality-based flight simulation device and a certified aviation training device within a collegiate aviation setting. By examining the cognitive loads and sense of presence generated from each device, the research will show that both devices can provide a unique benefit to the training community, and each should be used for different tasks to help train pilots. By using this novel technology for flight simulation, acquisition costs can be lowered, which could assist in removing the inequitable distribution of simulation resources across the collegiate aviation landscape. More simulation devices will, in turn, lead to lower flight training costs and more efficient training, allowing more people to access the career path and help solve a growing workforce challenge. Through educational policy reform, these virtual reality flight simulation devices can help solve challenges inherent to flight training and contribute to workforce development. This dissertation can serve as a basis for future policymaking to incorporate virtual reality-based simulation into a collegiate flight education curriculum.
