- 요약This dissertation contributes to the sociology of firearms by exploring how gun shows operate across Indiana, one of the states with the highest prevalence of these events. Drawing from over 100 hours of fieldwork attending 40 gun shows across the state and 50 in-depth interviews with participants, I reveal who participates in these events, why, and how. This research bridges the symbolic interactionist tradition with both the sociology of race and ethnicity and the sociology of firearms to reveal the various motivations for participating in Indiana gun show culture and the potential downfalls. I synthesize interaction ritual chain theory, cultural objects, and cultural capital to show how various "mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion" work together to maintain a dominant perception of safety, lawfulness, and fun for regular attendees. Despite the enjoyment and feelings of safety regular participants experience, interactions at gun shows are often guided by racialized and gendered understandings of who responsible gun owners are and how they present themselves. In turn, this raises important questions about who ultimately benefits the most from in-person firearm communities and private sale exemptions, especially if informal gatekeeping-shaped by racialized and gendered ideas of what a 'responsible' gun owner looks like-is seen as a key component of organizational success. .
