요약Neural processing and behavior are increasingly studied under naturalistic conditions due to neurophysiological and computational advances. Using these approaches, this thesis explores group vocal communication and auditory cortical processing during interactive communication in the highly social Mongolian gerbil. First, I use longitudinal acoustic monitoring to eavesdrop on the uninterrupted daily social vocal lives of gerbil families. Using a variational autoencoder, I created a low-dimensional map of the gerbil vocal repertoire and show that families have unique vocal dialects that remain stable over weeks. Second, I developed a deep learning system for non-invasive sound source localization and vocalization attribution using multi-channel audio from a microphone array. This system achieves state-of-the-art performance as compared to existing approaches and introduces the first large-scale benchmark for sound source localization and attribution in rodents. Finally, I introduce a novel behavior in gerbils - antiphonal ultrasonic communication - and demonstrate a necessary role for auditory cortex using wireless electrophysiology and pharmacological inactivation. Together, these studies advance our understanding of the neural and behavioral basis of vocal communication in naturalistic and ethologically relevant social contexts.
