- 요약Humans and other animals are thought to make choices between different options by evaluating and comparing their subjective values. Orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) has been implicated in value-based decision-making, especially when values must be inferred based on knowledge of the structure of the environment. However, the precise computation performed by OFC for state inference is unclear. In this thesis, I show that rats use distinct cognitive strategies to compute the subjective value of offered rewards at different stages of training. I then characterize neural dynamics in OFC at these different stages. We trained rats to perform a temporal wagering task with hidden states. Expert rats inferred the underlying reward state and updated their subjective beliefs about the value of reward offers based on the inferred state. Rats naive to the hidden states passively adapted to reward statistics. I found that inactivating OFC in expert rats impaired updating of subjective beliefs about states. Additionally, analysis of electrophysiology data revealed neural dynamics reflecting inferred states in rats performing inference, but not in rats using other strategies. This work identifies a precise computation performed by OFC and reveals neural signatures of hidden state inference.
