- 요약With the growing older adult population, there is an increasing need for design and technology to incorporate their perspectives. As a result, researchers in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) are turning to co-design-a practice that involves collaborating with end users throughout the research and design process-to better address the needs of older adults in emerging technologies. Researchers have emphasized the importance of active involvement, prompting deeper questions about what meaningful engagement and participation truly entail: how participation evolves, how designers can deepen their understanding of individuals and communities, and how best to structure engagement. However, a solid grasp of participation must go beyond a checklist of actions or motivations. In co-design, action, perception, and intention must be treated as an integrated whole; when viewed in isolation, they may not capture the full complexity of participation. Co-design should be understood as part of a unified, interconnected system.Drawing from my co-design experiences on projects that center on designing care for older adults, I propose the "Hierarchy of Care" in Design Research to guide HCI and HRI researchers and designers working in this space. Grounded in a care perspective, this framework brings together existing co-design approaches and consists of five key levels. At the foundation, researchers build the essential knowledge and practical skills needed for co-design. Next, they adopt a mindset of "research as care," treating the research process itself as an act of care. From there, researchers prioritize individual well-being, attending to the physical, cognitive, and social needs of older adults. This is followed by attention to relational well-being, where they foster healthy group dynamics during co-design. Finally, they create opportunities that empower participants, offering learning chances for older adults to gain meaningful insights into the technologies being developed. The hierarchy is important because later levels become difficult to implement if earlier ones are missing. By rooting care technology design in this layered approach, the framework promotes deeper engagement and more meaningful participation throughout co-design.
