요약Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from wildfires are a growing and concerning source of air pollutants. The emissions from wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires are particularly notable due to the relative lack of study compared to other wildfire emissions and the unique materials and exposure pathways that exist with them. This work aims to fill in gaps and deepen the understanding of these processes.First, field work was done aimed at assessing the lingering nature of WUI fire smoke in indoor environments following a wildfire event. This involved long-term measurements and quantification of several VOCs both indoors and outdoors to establish enhancements in indoor concentrations and monitor the decrease over time. Mitigation techniques were also used to test the impact on VOC concentrations in a real-world setting.Second, the unique emissions from the burning of structural materials were investigated through a series of laboratory experiments. These involved measuring the immediate emissions from several classes of materials over the course of roughly 80 experiments. We quantified emissions factors and looked at the effects of burn processes -burning versus pyrolysis- on emissions.Lastly, the near-term ambient impacts of residual WUI fire smoke were investigated using mobile measurements. The overall regional air quality is assessed as well as the impact of proximity to burned structures. We quantify and attribute shifts in the VOC profile over the course of the measurements and investigate some unique structural emissions identified in other work.
