초록/해제
요약This dissertation examines the digital political practices and ideological foundations of QAnon, a conspiracy theory group that began in 2017 and has gained significant traction in American politics. Through a multi-platform digital ethnography conducted over three years, this study investigates how QAnon adherents ("anons") engage in political participation and strategically utilize social media. I first identify six distinct modes of engagement among anons: Proselytizing, Gaming, Researching, Trolling, Revolutionizing, and Deliberating. These modes illustrate the diverse ways in which anons interact with QAnon ideology and participate in online discourse. I argue QAnon represents a novel form of political engagement that challenges traditional understandings of political participation. Next, I discuss a key finding which is the profound sense of alienation from mainstream institutions experienced by anons. This alienation serves as a unifying factor among an otherwise diverse group of followers. I then examine the gamification of politics and religion within QAnon, where political engagement takes on game-like elements. This gamification serves to create immersive experiences that blur the lines between entertainment, religion, and politics, offering anons a sense of purpose and engagement they feel is lacking through institutional means. This dissertation also introduces the concept of "digital circulation" to explain how anons strategically move between and within various social media platforms. This circulation is driven both by "push" factors such as content moderation on mainstream platforms, and "pull" factors, including the perceived freedom of expression on alternative platforms. The conclusion highlights a former anon who left the group and reflects on disaffiliation from QAnon. Overall, this dissertation has implications for understanding contemporary political engagement, the spread of conspiracy theories, social media platforms, and digital methods used by social science researchers.
