■520    ▼aThe  old  social  order  is  crumbling.  What's  to  come  remains  uncertain.  These  are  precarious  times.This  dissertation  begins  with  a  deeply  human  question:  What  would  it  actually  feel  like  to  live  in  a  socialist  world?  I  explore  that  question  through  a  sweeping,  interdisciplinary  story  that  moves  from  critique  to  construction,  and  history  to  imagination.I  argue  that  U.S.  civil  society-rooted  in  exclusion,  built  to  protect  and  justify  inequality-is  a  central  barrier  to  building  a  just  world.  Modern  capitalist  society  fosters  alienation,  exclusion,  and  profound  unfreedom  relative  to  the  history  of  humanity.  Socialism,  by  contrast,  holds  transformative  potential  far  beyond  economic  relations.  It  offers  a  holistic  reorientation  of  social  life  toward  solidarity,  cooperation,  and  agency.Chapters  1  and  2  trace  the  theoretical  foundations  of  civil  society,  map  its  development  in  the  United  States,  and  show  how  it  functions  less  as  a  vehicle  for  progress  than  as  a  pressure  valve  that  legitimates  domination.Chapter  3  retells  the  story  of  socialism  in  the  United  States.  Far  from  it  being  internal  failures  that  stopped  socialism's  rise,  these  chapters  show  how  the  movement  was  repeatedly  crushed  by  capitalist  coalitions  working  within  the  friendly  terrain  of  civil  society.Chapter  4  offers  a  case  study  of  the  Democratic  Socialists  of  America,  a  socialist  organization  currently  in  ascendence.Chapter  5  shows  how  government,  business,  and  advertising  systematically  severed  socialism  from  its  revolutionary  roots  in  the  public  sphere.Chapter  6  uses  utopian  fiction  literature  to  turn  our  story  toward  imagining  a  socialist  world.And  in  Chapter  7,  I  develop  an  "imaginary  ethnography,"  taking  readers  to  a  socialist  utopia-a  tangible  vision  of  regenerative  institutions  and  spaces  designed  to  cultivate  solidarity,  community,  and  agency.  What  emerges  is  a  model  of  a  socialist  civil  society  designed  to  restore  the  kinds  of  freedoms  humans  have  enjoyed  for  most  of  our  past.This  work  is  humanistic,  qualitative,  political,  and  deeply  personal.  Ultimately,  I  argue  that  reclaiming  the  socialist  imaginary-rooted  in  love,  sustained  by  solidarity-is  not  naive,  but  necessary.  We  have  the  capacity  to  remake  our  world.  We  need  the  vision.  This  is  my  contribution  to  that  vision.
