- 요약This dissertation proposes the compound eye as a conceptual framework for analyzing how digital technologies shape documentary filmmaking and artistic practices in twenty-first century China. Borrowed from entomology, the concept of the compound eye describes the contemporary perceptual modality of fragmentation and panorama produced by digital technologies and networked systems. More than a descriptive term, the compound eye also functions as a visual and narrative strategy, capturing how new modes of seeing enabled by digital technologies are creatively appropriated in critical cultural production to address pressing social and political issues.First and foremost, this dissertation highlights the compound eye as a discursive and visual construct-co-created through historical, social, cultural, and technological forces. The artworks and films examined in this study are not only shaped by compound vision but also actively shape the visual landscape associated with this mode of seeing, thereby contributing to the construction of the compound eye imaginary. As such, the compound eye emerges as a critical visual paradigm in contemporary Chinese visual culture, offering both a metaphor and a formal strategy for confronting the fractured, multilayered realities of the present.I contend that for contemporary filmmakers and artists, the compound eye aesthetic fosters a reflective mode of seeing that disperses the singular, authoritative gaze into a poly-perspectival and decentralized field. In doing so, these works challenge dominant epistemologies and open up new possibilities for ethical engagement, critical imagination, and socio-political intervention in an era defined by visual saturation, historical amnesia, and systemic precarity.
