초록/해제
요약This dissertation concerns the development of Finnish American language and culture over the 20th century in northern Wisconsin. My aim is to build on a verticalization theory of language shift (Brown 2022) to examine what happens culturally during and following a period of bilingualism and biculturalism. In examining these processes, I consider the influences of the wider U.S. social and cultural context of the 20th century, especially in media, etc. The development of the genre of polkabilly music (Leary 2006) throughout the North American Midwest suggests that cultural changes follow the same processes seen in linguistic koineization and reallocation, and I suggest the concept of cultural reallocation to explain how ethnic traditions can become incorporated into local and regional culture. By discussing two Finnish American polkabilly bands, I suggest that the meanings behind traditions that these groups hold are fluid, falling on a continuum between ethnic and local.
