- 요약This dissertation consists of three chapters that investigate the economic and environmental dynamics of agricultural decision-making in the U.S. Inner Corn Belt, focusing on how market incentives, policy instruments, and land ownership structures influence land use, crop choice, and sustainability outcomes.In "Dynamic land use impact of farm policy changes in the U.S. Corn Belt: A grid-level analysis", we developed a multi-use land use model to quantify the dynamic effects of crop prices, nitrogen fertilizer costs, and crop insurance subsidies on cropland allocation using high-resolution field-level data. With the connection to the ecological model, we estimate nitrous oxide (N2O) emission changes induced by simulated policy shocks, such as crop and fertilizer price changes and crop insurance subsidies removal. We provided additional empirical evidence that crop rotation significantly influences land use decisions, showing stronger responses on the rotational margin than the extensive margin. Soybean prices drive corn-soybean substitution more than corn prices affect corn acreage. Long-run elasticities exceed short-run ones, supporting partial adjustment behavior. A novel and replicable risk proxy based on marginal risk premiums was developed, providing a simple and transparent way to measure regional crop-specific risks for future research. While soybean expansion shows signs of adverse selection, no such evidence is found for corn. Market-based tools like carbon pricing through corn or fertilizer markets effectively reduce emissions, though removing subsidies may lower fiscal costs at the risk of higher environmental harm. We provide the social cost estimates of the nitrous emission changes under the policy shocks for carbon-related policy guidance.In "Rootworm corn seed disadoption: Land use & regional welfare analysis in the Inner Corn Belt", we evaluate the regional yield and economic impacts of Bt corn disadoption in the U.S.. Inner Corn Belt during the declining adoption period. Results show larger yield benefits in the West than in the East, with diminished gains during the post-disadoption period (2014-2022). The larger decline in yield benefits in the West than in the East also potentially supports the role played by rootworm resistance. We further link these yield effects to the land use model from the previous chapter to analyze the land use decisions, revenue, and welfare responses to the simulated yield shocks. The results indicate that welfare differences from Bt corn disadoption highlight the need for policy efforts to prevent resistance and preserve trait effectiveness. Uniform prices mask asymmetries: the East's smaller production base amplifies revenue gains, while the West absorbs larger yield-driven losses.In "Institutional land ownership and conservation practice adoption in the U.S. Midwest", we examine the role of institutional farmland ownership in shaping conservation behavior. Leveraging landowner survey data from Iowa and an instrumental variable approach using capital gains tax liability, we find that institutional owners are significantly more likely to adopt and invest in no-till and cover crops, regarding both the adoption likelihood and intensity. This challenges assumptions that they prioritize short-term profits over long-term sustainability, and points out several potential drivers to these positive effects: the presence of professional farm managers, frequent landowner engagement with the land, more access to conservation information, structured transition plans, and long-term investment motivations.
