- 요약In film, video games, short-form content, and live concerts, music fluctuates in and out of a listener's awareness. These oscillations contribute to immersive states such as absorption, flow, and transportation. This dissertation explores how musical and audiovisual characteristics shape the dynamics of immersion and guide listeners' attention in both digital short-form media and live concert environments.Across a series of behavioral experiments, this project examines how musical repetition, audiovisual congruence, and individual differences in listening context influence immersion. Using both explicit self-report measures and implicit behavioral indices such as viewing time and time estimation, these studies systematically vary musical repetition and audiovisual congruence within controlled audiovisual corpora. This dissertation also reports on survey-based research conducted at live concerts of video game music, assessing how musical attention and patterns of thought relate to degree of immersion. The final chapter theorizes how immersive states and shifting attention might reshape how we approach musical analysis in real-world, socially situated listening contexts.Musical repetition and audiovisual congruence consistently influenced how listeners deployed their attention and became immersed in the flow of short-form content. Findings suggest that greater musical repetition increased reported immersion but decreased viewing time. Conversely, higher semantic audiovisual congruence increased both reported immersion and viewing time. In concert settings, high immersion often co-occurred with diverse thought patterns, challenging definitions of immersive states defined solely by focused attention. While listeners' musical interpretations and thought patterns displayed similar trends, free-text responses remained deeply individual, shaped by prior experience and contextual familiarity.Together, this dissertation illustrates the dynamic nature of attention and immersion in mediated contexts, shaped by musical, audiovisual, and individual features. These findings challenge traditional models of musical analysis, which may assume static and uniform modes of musical engagement. Centering variation in attention, this dissertation offers a more dynamic and inclusive perspective on musical engagement in varied listening contexts. Rather than treating shifting attention as a limitation, this project reframes it as a defining attribute of musical engagement and highlights the need for models that reflect attentional fluidity.
