- 요약Mumming is a dramatic midwinter house-visiting tradition introduced to Ireland from Britain in the early modern era, notable for its musical masked performance featuring combat, death, and resurrection. This dissertation covers the history of mumming in Ireland spanning the mid-1930s to 2001 as documented in a variety of archival sources, then shifts to investigating how the tradition is performed today in two communities.The first half of this dissertation offers the first study of all available archival materials on mumming in Ireland. These collections document the demographics, distribution, material culture, dramatis personae, and renumeration for the performance, tracking changes over time. I also address the relationship between mumming and related Gaelic customs, demonstrating how the tradition adopted Irish features.In the second half of the dissertation, I use ethnographic methods to study contemporary mummers in two communities, the Fingal Mummers of County Dublin and the Armagh Rhymers of County Armagh. These groups along with others in Sligo and Fermanagh reveal that contemporary mumming exists on a spectrum ranging from the traditional to the innovative. In all cases, mummers have adapted the tradition to contemporary conditions, while their commitment to the tradition is often motivated by a conscious effort to combat forces of modernity keeping people apart. In the context of Northern Ireland, my dissertation shows that mumming has a long history of being shared by Protestant and Catholic communities before, during, and after the Troubles; the Armagh Rhymers formed to combat sectarianism, performing for mixed audiences of schoolchildren throughout Northern Ireland. Through elements of liminality and communitas, mumming allows for performers and audiences to break down social barriers and reaffirm communal ties. I show that traditional mumming in Ireland is a liminal genre which has carnivalesque and ritualesque features and may in certain social contexts perform ritual functions.
