초록/해제
요약A large part of my compositional practice has involved creating ambient soundscapes out of densely layered unison canons. The creative impulse to compose this kind of music stems from a desire to balance harmonic clarity with textural and contrapuntal complexity, affecting a spare amount of harmonic material with ephemeral contrails from the counterpoint. In this dissertation, I explore such applications of unison canons - textures which are nominally contrapuntal, but which contribute to a rather monophonic listening experience. After a "prefatory manifesto", in which I discuss how this type of counterpoint relates to my aesthetic values as a composer, I investigate four pieces that dwell in the liminal zone of overwhelmingly dense polyphony: Two canons from the Renaissance by Ockeghem and Josquin, and two mid 20th-century orchestral works (Ligeti's Lontano and Norgard's Second Symphony). Finally, I delve into the creative component of my dissertation, a piece called the sun must bear no name for nine multitracked violins, which traverses similar aesthetic and contrapuntal terrain as the previous case studies.
