- 요약Traditional understandings of social categorization may bias dominant groups toward negative reactions to diversity. Two papers illustrate the effectiveness of changing the framing of social categories as a possible tool to ameliorate dominant group members' resistance to social change. We disrupt the typical intergroup differentiation process in intergroup relations by having participants reflect on the overlapping nature of social categories. This framework is tested across two contexts: White Americans reactions to demographic diversity (Paper 1) and STEM students' interest in interdisciplinary education (Paper 2). Across both papers we find evidence that the framing of social categories as overlapping rather than discrete has benefits for dominant group members' intergroup attitudes and provide recommendations on how these categorization framings can be used to address contemporary issues facing dominant groups reactions to social change today.
