- 요약The recruitment practices used by tertiary music education faculty and administrators directly influence the future of music classrooms in America (DeLorenzo & Silverman, 2016; Edgar, 2018; Elpus, 2015; Elpus & Abril, 2011; Gillespie & Hamann, 1999; Hash, 2021; Koza, 2008; Robison et al., 2020). Ijoma et al. (2022) argue that the racial, ethnic, and gender representation of teachers and faculty at institutions of higher education (IHEs) should reflect the demographics of the students they serve. Researchers have raised concerns about the demographic makeup of music classrooms, noting that music education is primarily led by a predominantly White workforce (Elpus, 2015; Elpus & Abril, 2011; Fitzpatrick et al., 2014). While some scholars have pointed to collegiate recruitment as an important factor in shaping representation (Elpus, 2015; Fitzpatrick et al., 2014; Hess, 2017; Koza, 2008), few have directly studied this issue. The purpose of this survey study was to describe how pre-college students are recruited into undergraduate music education programs. This research is situated within Milner's (2012) opportunity gap framework to contextualize the study's questions and findings. The study sample includes music education faculty at programs accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).Findings suggest that while most programs engage in some form of recruitment, nearly 30% of NASM-accredited institutions do not. Additionally, most programs lack an articulated recruitment mission. Without an updated study like Elpus (2015), it remains unclear how, or if, music education demographics have changed.Practical implications include the recommendation that programs develop clearly stated recruitment missions aimed at addressing systemic inequities. Conspicuous, long-term recruitment efforts should begin in primary-level music classes and continue through high school. Future research should include a comparative case study of schools with demonstrated success in recruiting diverse cohorts. Replication of this dissertation is also recommended due to significant political shifts since its inception. Finally, an updated replication of Elpus's (2015) study is needed to determine the current demographic profile of individuals completing the PRAXIS II music education exams.
