- 요약Emergent bilinguals represent one of the fastest growing student populations in the U.S. educational system (NCES, 2023a). However, this rapid rise in the population of emergent bilingual students in schools across the country is accompanied by a continuous disproportionate representation of emergent bilinguals in special education and advanced placement programs, lower graduation rates, and longstanding low reading achievement when compared to their not-emergent bilingual peers. Many scholars have focused on tiered service-delivery systems, such as multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), to improve student and school-wide outcomes through preventative evidence-based decision-making and intervention practices. Despite the objective to meet the learning needs of all students, MTSS implementation and practices have fallen short of adequately responding to the needs of many culturally and linguistically diverse students. For emergent bilingual students, and with consideration to reading universal screening practices, researchers have indicated that tools utilized to universally screen all students' reading skills may not be appropriate for examining emergent bilingual students' skills in English. This study built off the recommendations put forth by Newell and colleagues (2020) to explore alternatives to utilizing ORF as a single-screener with emergent bilinguals by analyzing the accuracy of screening decisions made for emergent bilinguals with composite score of the newer version of aimswebPlus. The results of this study revealed limited evidence of differential test bias. Additionally, the results of this study indicated that aimswebPlus demonstrates adequate classification accuracy (i.e., good to excellent AUC values) for universal screening of emergent bilingual students. Decisions made using vendor cut-scores demonstrated higher values of specificity than those made with optimized cut-scores, but lower than acceptable values of sensitivity. When sensitivity was optimized, specificity did not meet the desired criteria in most instances. Furthermore, cut-scores to optimize sensitivity for emergent bilinguals was different than optimal cut-scores for not-emergent bilinguals. Future research directions and implications for practice, in the context of the study's limitations, are discussed.
