- 요약The ability to regulate biological and behavioral responses according to contextual demands is a critical component of lifespan functioning. Early environments are among the most robust predictors of regulatory processes, as they help guide development to meet current and predicted environmental demands. Due to the heightened rate of biobehavioral development during the prenatal period and infancy, aspects of the in-utero and early caregiving environments are particularly important for the development of regulatory processes. Informed by the Adaptive Calibration Model and Dynamic Systems Theory, the objective of this dissertation was to identify biopsychosocial predictors of infant biobehavioral reactivity and regulation during the prenatal period and early infancy in two complementary studies. In a sample of 118 mother-infant dyads, Study 1 tested associations of maternal psychological distress and inflammation during pregnancy with infant behavioral and immune cell gene regulation at one month of age. Results highlighted distinct pathways through which prenatal psychological distress and inflammation predict infant regulation, measured by both behavior and immune cell gene expression. Transitioning to the early caregiving environment, Study 2 tested the concurrent and prospective associations of dyadic mother-infant behaviors with infant behavioral and emotional reactivity and regulation using State Space Grid methodology in a sample of 77 mother-infant pairs. Findings from Study 2 indicated that both the content of and variability in dyadic mother-infant interactions during a relational stressor uniquely predicted positive and negative reactivity, both concurrently and six months later. Taken together, the findings from this dissertation help to advance scientific knowledge of the biopsychosocial processes through which early environments predict infant regulation across the prenatal period and infancy. Specifically, these results provide novel evidence of the distinct pathways through which biological, psychological, and social factors contribute to early regulatory processes. Moreover, findings highlight a unique role for environmental dynamics in shaping biobehavioral regulation. The present results may also have broader implications for health and development, as early regulatory processes can predict later health and well-being.
