- 요약Emotion-related impulsivity (ERI) is characterized by pervasive patterns of rash behavior in contexts of heightened emotion. ERI has robust, reproducible, and transdiagnostic correlations with psychopathology, and understanding its neurocognitive correlates may guide future high-yield mental health interventions. The Glutamate Amplifies Noradrenergic Effects (GANE) model is a neurobiological framework that describes interactions between arousal-related noradrenergic activity and excitatory signals in the brain, whereby these signals interact in a positive feedback loop to amplify the effects of priority in perception and memory. Recent work hypothesized that GANE mechanisms may contribute to ERI, as GANE knit together the heterogeneous functional magnetic resonance imagining studies of ERI and predicted novel empirical results in a systematic way. The current study extended the application of the GANE model to the neurocognitive study of ERI using pupillometry in a threat-related motivated memory paradigm that has been shown to elicit arousal and GANE-like effects in long-term memory.Participants (N = 132) completed measures of trait impulsivity, internalizing and externalizing psychopathology symptoms, and the Monetary Incentive Encoding Task (MIET). The MIET included an encoding phase with trial-level manipulations of threat-induced arousal and visual stimulus priority, and a delayed recognition memory test to measure the arousal-by-priority interaction proposed by the GANE model. Pupil diameter was measured continuously during the encoding phase to index physiological arousal. Preliminary analyses identified unusable data due to careless responding, poor encoding task performance, and sparse pupil data, and produced the final sample (N = 110).Correlations between ERI and psychopathology were significant and had large effect sizes. Supporting task validity, the MIET arousal manipulation was observed, and the expected arousal-by-priority interaction in memory accuracy was present at the group level. Contrary to our hypotheses, ERI did not moderate the arousal-by-priority interaction in memory accuracy. Trial-level analyses that modeled effects of pupil dilation also did not yield evidence for an interaction of ERI and arousal-induced alterations in accuracy.The current study contributes to the neurocognitive literature on ERI. Behavioral and pupillometric analyses did not provide evidence consistent with a link between the GANE model and the neurobiology of ERI. However, more research on this model is warranted with improvements in sampling from the community participants who better represent the spectra of high distress and functional impairment that are often associated with severe ERI. Future work should improve experimental design by incorporating the environmental contexts that confer vulnerability to emotion-driven behaviors in ways that are sensitive to individualized learning histories. By building on the current study, future work on this model could clarify the neurobiological processes underlying ERI.
