초록/해제
요약This dissertation explores the mutually constituted nature of music and material culture through an analysis of dress and visual communication within the traditional, contemporary old-time music scene in the United States. Utilizing ethnographic fieldwork, archival research, semiotic and formal analysis, and participant-observation, I suggest that dress is an avenue for the expression of historical imagination, the performance of tradition and nostalgia, and a facilitator of belonging. This multi-sited project conducted between 2020-2025 includes festival fieldwork, concert attendance, digital ethnography, community music session participation, and formal and informal conversations that shape my understanding and analysis of dress conventions within this robust contemporary music scene. Special attention is paid to the dynamic between insider aesthetics and the lay or outsider audiences who receive both the visual performance of dress and the sonic performance of old-time music. I explore what traditional music looks like, how "folkness" is visually expressed, and the ways traditional musicians engage in time travel through the performance of this living tradition. I also present direct corollaries between musical style and variation within the old-time corpus and the dress style selected by the performers, sometimes even within the same individual's repertoire. Through the social activation, use, and reading of dress, I offer new understandings of the old-time music genre and the maintenance of this tradition.
