- 요약Interactive Digital Narrative (IDN) research investigates how the computer's digital affordances allow for radically new manifestation of narratives. It challenges designers tocreate and researchers to examine these complex narrative experience work, by providinga space to examine the language of their design, offer guidance on the systems used, andprovide examples of unique artifacts that disrupt our understanding of what a narrative canbe. IDN currently suffers a limitation of language which overly focuses on immersionbased design to the detriment of other design alternatives, curtails the inclusion of ambiguity within both interactor experience and artifact design, and avoids states of assumedfailure in IDN artifact research, design, and interpretation. This dissertation remediatesthese issues through the integration of concepts from Queer Theory, Japanese Media andLiterature Studies, and Science Fiction Studies into IDN (such as: Queer Failure, QueerUtopia, Restorying, Kishotenketsu, and Cognitive Estrangement) and proposes of two newhybrid concepts, the Queer Twist and the Active Disruption of Belief. The Queer Twistaims to address concerns regarding the exclusion of failure, ambiguity, and lack of opportunities for artifact recontextualization while the Active Disruption of Belief expands onexisting IDN terminology and principles to facilitate more broadly accessible research anddesign as well as reopen IDN design options beyond immersion-focused favoritism.
