■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  project  uses  Ifa  divination  as  an  alternative  model  for  reading  black  diasporic  texts.  In  Ifa  divination,  rather  than  the  inordinate  focus  on  secondary  texts  and  theory,  the  focus  remains  on  the  interaction  between  the  "reader"/seeker,  and  the  "primary  texts"  revealed  to  him  from  Ifa's  extensive  archive  of  narrative  poems  from  which  it  draws  to  divine  and  proffer  solutions  to  the  seeker's  problem.  These  "primary  texts"  are  in  fact  the  experience  of  human  beings  and  other  phenomena  gathered  over  centuries  and  crafted  into  a  poetic  format  that  helps  it  serve  as  a  tool  for  increasing  consciousness  for  the  living  reader.  I  refer  to  this  shift  as  "putting  life  first"  in  which  the  focus  is  on  the  reader's  "life"  first  and  therefore  on  the  work  of  literature  as  first  and  foremost  a  tool  for  living.  This  diverges  from  an  environment  in  which  it  is  most  often  the  opposite:  the  human  being  and  life  as  a  tool  for  expanding  "literature".  Therefore  this  dissertation  maps  each  protagonist's  movement  from  compulsive  living  and  an  attendant  static  self-concept  adopted  from  placing  one's  outer  world  first,  to  a  point  of  conscious  living  in  which  the  protagonist  changes  the  form  of  the  undesirable  outward  situation  by  embracing  the  primacy  and  dynamism  of  their  inner  world  and  acknowledging  it  as  the  source  of  their  outward  situations  and  therefore,  the  source  of  change.  The  scholar  accompanies  the  protagonists  in  this  journey,  and  therefore  the  dissertation  form  itself  is  altered,  foregrounding  life  and  experience  over  theory;  foregrounding  life  as  the  destination  of  reading  and  the  consciousness  drawn  therefrom  rather  than  yet  another  secondary  text;  foregrounding  the  ongoing  relationship  between  the  reader  and  what  he  reads  into  his  own  life  rather  than  the  culmination  of  one's  reading  into  a  new  generalizing  "theory"  and  the  expansion  of  "literature"..
■520    ▼aprojet  de  these  utilise  la  tradition  divinatoire  de  Ifa  comme  modele  alternatif  de  lecture  des  textes  de  la  diaspora  noire.  Plutot  que  de  se  concentrer  excessivement  sur  les  textes  secondaires  et  la  theorie,  la  divination  Ifa  privilegie  l'interaction  entre  le  «  lecteur  »/chercheur  et  les  «  textes  primaires  »  qui  lui  sont  reveles  par  les  vastes  archives  de  poemes-narratifs  d'Ifa,  dans  lesquelles  il  puise  pour  deviner  et  proposer  des  solutions  au  probleme  du  chercheur.  Ces  «  textes  primaires  »  sont  en  realite  l'experience  humaine  et  d'autres  phenomenes,  recueillie  au  fil  des  siecles  et  transformee  en  un  format  poetique  qui  en  fait  un  outil  de  prise  de  conscience  pour  le  lecteur  vivant.  J'appelle  ce  changement  «  mettre  la  vie  au  premier  plan  »,  ou  l'accent  est  mis  sur  la  «  vie  »  du  lecteur  et,  par  consequent,  sur  l'oeuvre  litteraire  comme  outil  de  vie  avant  tout.  Cela  s'ecarte  d'un  environnement  ou  c'est  le  plus  souvent  l'inverse  :  l'etre  humain  et  la  vie  comme  outil  d'expansion  de  la  «  litterature  ».  Cette  these  retrace  donc  le  parcours  de  chaque  protagoniste,  passant  d'une  vie  compulsive  et  d'une  conception  de  soi  statique,  adopte  d'une  approche  priorisant  le  monde  exterieur,  a  une  vie  consciente  ou  le  protagoniste  modifie  la  forme  de  la  situation  exterieure  indesirable  en  acceptant  la  primaute  et  le  dynamisme  de  son  monde  interieur  et  en  le  reconnaissant  comme  la  source  de  ses  situations  exterieures  et,  par  consequent,  la  source  du  changement.  Le  chercheur  accompagne  les  protagonistes  dans  ce  voyage,  et  par  consequent  la  forme  meme  de  la  these  est  modifiee,  mettant  en  avant  la  vie  et  l'experience  plutot  que  la  theorie  ;  mettant  en  avant  la  vie  comme  destination  de  la  lecture  et  la  conscience  qui  en  decoule  plutot  qu'un  autre  texte  secondaire  ;  mettant  en  avant  la  relation  continue  entre  le  lecteur  et  ce  qu'il  lit  dans  sa  propre  vie  plutot  que  l'aboutissement  de  sa  lecture  dans  une  nouvelle  «  theorie  »  generalisante  et  l'expansion  de  la  «  litterature  ».
